I had a job interview with the Sheriff's Department this week and yesterday I received a letter in the mail telling me that I received a passing score on my oral board interview. Woohoo!
But, wait. That does not mean I have the job! First I have to fill out the 16 page background information packet included with my letter. If you are reading this, your name will undoubtedly be listed on my form. Sorry. Then, they say, successful candidates will be required to pass the following components in the selection process: personal history & security clearance, integrity interview, background investigation, polygraph, psychological evaluation (depending on position) and medical examination.
Um, all this for a part time typing job? Wow. I'd hate to see what applicants for the FBI or Homeland Security have to go through.
Oh well. Guess I'll give it a go & start wading through my background packet...I know what I'll be doing this weekend.

Zoo
Julia had a fever the other day so I decided to load up the wagon and take a nice walk at the zoo to infuse her (and me) with fresh air and sunshine...couldn't hurt!
It was a really nice day (72 degrees!) and not too crowded as we meandered on monkey side...(we rarely do the whole zoo in one visit--they can choose 'monkey side' or 'polar bear side'--opposite ends of the zoo--when we arrive...especially on sick days).
There was an adorable baby monkey beside which we sat for a good 20 minutes--it was so rambunctious and entertaining. Lots of other animals were out and about too...

Lollipops, soup pans and bread, oh my.
Our dog is a counter surfer...admission is the first step to recovery. Actually, there is no recovery happening on her end, it's just that her owners have learned to make sure the counters are free of anything edible...or anything edible sealed tightly in tupperware (not at all a deterrent for her--she chews through that no problem!) before we leave the house.
It's been only recently that we've also had to start making sure that the kitchen sink is empty, as well. We came home the other day to several bowls and a licked-clean pot of soup--complete with spoon still inside--littering our kitchen floor.
That dog has a problem. But quite a talent for removing things carefully from the sink so as to make it look like she didn't do a thing. But I'm on to her, man.
What's one more thing to try to do as I rush out the door every morning? Coats on. Shoes on. Kitchen sparkling clean. Yah, I have time for that.

Here is what a Pyrex pie plate looks like after falling off the top shelf of a top cupboard and shattering into a bazillion pieces all over the kitchen floor and after being swept up into a neat little pile.
Just so you know. I don't recommend letting this happen to you. Grrrrr.

Everyone think spelly thoughts!! Tonight is the big district spelling bee for Emma!!! I'll let you know how it goes!!!
Thursday Update:
Wow! What a tremendous job Emma did! After the written portion of the bee, they posted 28 names of kids who made it to the oral round...then they announced the names of 9 kids who had to be in a "spell-off" for the final two spots. Emma's name was called for that. So she went to test again and was gone for what seemed like FOREVER. Finally she came back in feeling confident...checking the spelling of 'lieutenant' and 'renaissance' with me (and happy she spelled them right). But in the end, they posted the final two names and she was not one of them. She was pretty bummed out but managed to see the light over a double scoop of 'love potion' ice cream at Baskin Robbins.
We think she did an awesome job...the other kids from her school also didn't make it to the oral round (did I mention that the 'jungle' girl who came in second at the school bee was there...thanks to her psycho-mom...but she didn't even make the first cut) and there were 8th graders competing!!
Oh well!! Better luck next year!!

February
February is traditionally germy at our house. This year, February hasn't let us down...and it's only the 5th day. So far, Julia has had croup and missed two days of school (ok...technically that was the end of January but she still has the nasty cough to earn recognition in February). This morning Sophie woke up feeling crummy so I called her in sick & stopped by King Soopers for some groceries where she proceeded to be sick into a bag at the check out counter. She's sleeping now and feeling better but I hear her occassionally coughing as well. Poor thing!
Two down...three to go...
I knew I should have bought stock in Clorox Wipes...maybe it's not too late! February is still young!!
(4:00 update--Sophie woke up from her last nap with a stiff neck and 101 fever!! Now I'm googling 'meningitis'--yikes!!)
See what I mean?!? Stupid February.

39 (continued...)
I decided to drag myself to the doctor this morning after bravely and silently suffering for years with various aches and pains and lumps and bumps...(cue the violins)...I figured I'd save it all up for one visit...now that I'm old and all.
Man did I hit the jackpot! (Or Kaiser did, anyway)
I left the office with 4 referrals to other departments...Radiology, Orthopedic Surgery, General Surgery and Physical Therapy for various tests & treatments.
(all of that yet nothing terribly serious...no worries)
Guess I should have spread all these things out over the years...oh well.
Single-Handedly Keep Kaiser Permanente in Business in These Times of Economic Stress.
Check.
One less thing for my list.

sigh.
This means I only have one year to finish the things on my list of 'Things to do Before You're 40."
Guess I should start by making that list.
And I better hurry!
Bob took me and the gals up the hill for breakfast and then to try out my ghost meter at the Idaho Springs Cemetery...a really cool old mountain cemetery filled with people named Hugo, Alice, Bertie and Ethel...from the 1800's...not to mention the guys from the Colorado 1st and 2nd Cavalry Divisions (think Sand Creek Massacre).
It was all fine and interesting until we came across a family plot with the husband and wife team of "Robert and Annie" memorialized in stone.
Ooh. A little too close for comfort.
The meter didn't go off once which sort of makes sense...why would ghosts hang around with a bunch of dead people?! That would just be boring! So we headed up to Georgetown for a little shopping & a stop at the soda fountain (built in 1908) for hot cocoa and chocolate phosphates.
Spend your birthday in a graveyard.
Check.
